Policy Manual

5.8 Long Term Disability

Purpose

To allow full-time employees partial paid time off if disabled for a long period.

Scope

Full-time employees of Rochester University.

Policy

Full-time employees are eligible for long term disability following 90 days of documented disability. Long Term Disability is administered by a third party administrator. Per the plan, benefits reduce 35% at age 65 and 50% at age 70. Additional details are available on the employee benefit center website: www.ngeinfo.com/nge, or by reviewing the summary plan description for LTD located in the Human Resources Office.

Rochester University will hold the employee’s position and maintain employer provided benefits through the first thirty days an employee is on long term disability. Benefits will terminate on the last day of the month following the thirty day hold. Persons coming off long term disability have the opportunity to apply for open positions the College has at that time.

Reccurence of Disability

A disability claim is considered a continuation of the previous disability claim if the employee:

  • returns to regular work for less than 90 days, and
  • suffers a recurrence of the previous disability from the same or related causes as determined by the Claims Administrator.

Otherwise, the later period of disability is a new disability and the waiting period will begin again.
