Chapter 1: General Information

1.1 Purpose

To streamline documentation, improve policy effectiveness and expand communications at Rochester University.

Rochester University Policies:

  • Guide College practices;
  • Help ensure compliance with laws, statutes, regulations and government requirements;
  • Support the achievement of the College’s mission and values;
  • Reduce institutional risk;
  • Have long-term application and are subject to regular review and updates.

1.2 Distribution

This document is available on the Faculty and Staff portal, Human Resources section for employees to view at any time. Copies may also be obtained from the Human Resource Office. The manual provides internal guidance for Rochester University personnel and is not intended for external use or distribution.

1.3 Updates

The manual is updated and improved on a continual basis. Each update or revision is reflected by the date on the inside cover (page 2). Because this manual is a changing document, it is very important to check the date reflected on page 2 regularly for updates and changes. Since omissions, inconsistencies or errors may be discovered from time to time, personnel are requested to bring these to the attention of their supervisor or the Human Resources Office. Recommendations for improvement are highly encouraged.

Administrators should ensure this manual reflects current and accurate policy and procedures for their administrative function. The Human Resources Office is responsible for making all updates to this document. As policy changes are received, administrators will make a reasonable effort to inform their personnel of the changes. All policy changes must be ratified by the Administrative Team before being added or updated in this manual.

1.4 Responsibilities and Authority

This manual reflects official College policy. Office policies should be incorporated into this manual to the greatest extent possible. All College personnel should be familiar with the information contained in this manual and are expected to personally comply with the policies, procedures and guidelines contained herein.

1.5 Deviation from the Manual

This manual establishes policy for college-wide operations. Abnormal or unique situations may occasionally necessitate deviating from the standard operating procedures. When these situations occur, college administration may approve deviations.

Should a health, welfare or safety situation require immediate policy deviation, personal and professional judgment may override the established policies as appropriate.

1.6 New Policy Development

If and when there is a change in the nature of the operations of Rochester University, policies will be developed to address changes in operations. The need for new policies will be reviewed annually by the College’s administration.
