16.1 Snow Removal
Policy
Our campus is in use seven days per week. Unattended snow creates risk of accident, legal liability, and housekeeping problems. Unattended snow frequently turns into ice, which becomes an even worse hazard. Every time we have a measurable amount of snow, the following should happen, SEVEN days per week:
- By 8:00 a.m. all sidewalks should be swept or shoveled completely clean and kept as clean as possible, given other snow removal priorities. “Completely clean” includes length, width, and depth of the area identified.
- The pavement in the traffic circle between Gatewood Hall and the auditorium should be treated as sidewalk.
- The path on the north side of Lake Norcentra should be treated as a sidewalk all the way to where it joins the Palmer sidewalk.
- The sidewalk on the east side of the main entrance road (near the baseball field) is included as a sidewalk.
- The sidewalk from near Gatewood/Ferndale across the outdoor basketball courts and over to the parking lot should be included as a sidewalk.
- All steps and slopes should be salted appropriately, given the temperature and the weather forecast. This includes at the main entrance to Gallaher, the roadway near Gatehouse (which serves as a walk path), and near Palmer.
- All roadways are the next priority, ASAP. Entryways right at the entrances to the campus should be salted appropriately, given the temperature and the weather forecast.
- All parking lots are the next priority, ASAP. If significant accumulations of snow are piled around in interior places on parking lots, Sunday afternoon should be scheduled to clear the snow to the edges of parking lots. Depending on the situation, hand shoveling between vehicles may be essential.
- The pathway to Rochester Church of Christ is the next priority.
If significant amounts of snow fall during daytime hours or early evening, attention similar to the above should be given to snow removal and salting until we have adequately served all students who are on the campus for classes, i.e., until about 9:00 p.m. most evenings.
