15.6 Exterior Signage
Purpose
To establish Rochester University’s policies and procedures regarding campus exterior signage.
Scope
This policy applies to all Exterior Campus Sign Requests of any type. This includes changes to existing signage and the creation of new signage. Exterior campus signs include all signs, placards, banners, window clings, vehicular graphics, pedestrian way-finding signs, building and parking lot signs, directories and event signs.
Background
Rochester University has created an exterior signage system that will provide an effective way-finding system, establish its presence and boundaries, and promote a positive image for the College. Accordingly, Rochester University has developed a complete set of design standards for exterior campus signs. These design standards provide the specifications for the size, shape, colors and fonts to be utilized on all exterior signage. To insure a uniform aesthetic look, procedures have been established to handle signage requests.
Procedures
Requests for new permanent signs and changes to existing permanent signs must be approved by Facilities. Facilities will determine if the signage is an institutional or departmental expenditure. Facilities will review each proposed permanent sign and sign location to ensure it complies with the City of Rochester Hills sign ordinance. Facilities will work with RC Communication Services to ensure that the design criteria remain uniform for exterior signage throughout the Campus. Communication Services is responsible for any design/artwork needed for the signage as well as securing the appropriate quotes from vendors.
No temporary special event or way-finding signs will be permitted without prior approval of Facilities and Communication Services. Visitors should be directed using appropriate signage as specified in this policy. Brochures and marketing materials advertising events should reference these signs.
