Non-Collegiate Credit Opportunities

Advanced Placement (AP)

High school students may take Advanced Placement (AP) examinations. The university awards credit for some freshman courses based on AP scores of three, four, or five. Rochester University does not assess grades or fees on Advanced Placement credit. Contact the Office of the Registrar at registrar@RochesterU.edu for equivalencies.

College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

Rochester University undergraduate students may receive credit for successful completion of selected CLEP exams. Students must attain the CLEP standard passing score to receive credit. Students may not seek CLEP credit for courses which they failed in regular attendance or by examination at Rochester University. All CLEP tests must be completed by the end of the student’s second semester enrolled at Rochester University. Credit may not be granted for an exam taken during a student’s final semester. In addition to the standard testing fee, there is an administrative fee and a per-credit-hour fee for posting qualifying credit to the Rochester University student’s transcript. 

Non-RU students should contact their institution for rules regarding CLEP tests and credit granted.

Corporate/Non-Collegiate Training

Based on the recommendation of the National College Credit Recommendation Service (NCCRS) and/or the American Council on Education (ACE), credit may be granted for educational programs sponsored by non-collegiate organizations (labor, government, business, associations, or private training organizations).

DSST (formerly DANTES) Examination Program

Rochester University undergraduate students may receive credit for successful completion of selected DANTES/DSST exams. Students may not seek DANTES/DSST credit for courses which they failed in regular attendance or by examination at Rochester University. All DANTES/DSST tests must be completed by the end of the student’s second semester enrolled at Rochester University. Credit may not be granted for an exam taken during a student’s final semester. There is an administrative fee and a per-credit-hour fee for posting qualifying credit to the student’s transcript. International Baccalaureate (IB)

High school students may take International Baccalaureate (IB) examinations. The university awards credit for some freshman courses based on Higher Level (HL) IB scores of four or higher. No credit is given for Standard Level (SL) courses. Rochester University does not assign grades or charge fees on International Baccalaureate credit. Military Service Training

Rochester University recognizes learning gained from specialized training and experiences in the military service. Evaluation will be done using the American Council on Education’s (ACE) Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services. There is an administrative fee and a per-credit-hour fee for posting qualifying credit to the student’s transcript. Credits will be applied to the student’s degree program as substantiated by appropriate military records submitted to the Office of the Registrar.
