3.14 Hiring Age Requirements

Purpose

To establish policy on age requirements for student and campus workers.

Policy

To ensure RU meets the requirements for OHSA and the Wage and Hour laws, the university must not hire any workers less than 18 years of age for any job that “may” be hazardous. The implications of “may” can be interpreted in a broad manner and could be applied to almost all campus jobs.

To ensure all legal requirements are met and to reduce legal liabilities, no person may be hired for a campus job under the age of 18. In specific instances where there appears to be no hazardous work, a written request may be sent to the Vice President overseeing Finance & Operations for special approval.
