Policy Manual

18.1 Use of School Colors in Sports Uniforms

Policy

To establish a policy regarding sports uniforms as they relate to the school colors.

For purposes of the sports uniforms, the Crimson color is designated by sports clothing manufacturers as Cardinal. When ordering sports uniforms, the color requested should be Cardinal.

Crimson (Cardinal) and White must be the dominant colors in all sports uniforms. It is the requirement of the university that anything an athlete or coach will wear that would identify their sport at Rochester University must be in the dominant school colors. This would include at the game, before the game, and after the game. This would include anything that the university purchases for the athlete for "official" wear and anything that the student would purchase for purposes of representing a Rochester University sports team.

As a minimum, all players when they take the field, court, etc., must be in apparel of the dominant school colors that meets the criteria set forth below. This minimum would include warm-ups that are worn by any team just prior to the start of the game. During the game, coaches will also adhere to policy guidelines.

  • Baseball hats, belts, and sock trim may be in black if they are not in one of the school colors.
  • The coaches, at their discretion and without regard to school color criteria, may designate practice apparel.
  • Any lettering or other embroidery on hats or any other items must be in Crimson (Cardinal) or White (But see specific exceptions identified at "Trim Color" in the section below.)
  • Accessories such as duffel bags, etc., when they are considered a part of the "official" uniform, (i.e. they are all purchased together as a group) should be in the school colors if available as a stock color. If not available in school colors as a stock color, then they should be in the trim color black.
  • Sweatshirts or other casual sportswear can be in neutral colors (heather, gray, etc.) as long as the lettering on them is Crimson. If they are going to be in a dark color, they must be in Crimson with White lettering.
  • If any sports team has "team" travel apparel it should be in the school colors Crimson (Cardinal) and White if available as a stock color. If not available in school colors as a stock color, then black is acceptable with all logos and lettering in Crimson or White.

Exception to bullet point #3 above: Trim Color -There are some available lettering styles where the trim could actually be one of the dominant school colors and that is acceptable. A black trim color will be allowed in very specific situations as identified below.

  • Letter and number trim in black will be permissible but is limited to no more than 1/4inch wide in any situation. No other black trim is allowed on any other part of any uniform.
  • There is a popular style of baseball uniforms that has a single stripe down the outside of each pant leg on white pants. The trim color black would be permissible for this stripe if no more than 1/2inch wide and the school color Crimson is not available as a stock color.
  • Pinstripe style baseball pants with black pinstripes are acceptable if the pinstripe color is not available in Crimson as a stock color.

The purchase of all sports team wearables (whether bought by the university or bought by monies donated to the sports teams or bought by team members) must have prior approval from the Athletic Director. The Athletic Director must approve any exceptions to the above criteria.
