Course Catalog 2017-2018

Theatre, BA/BS

The Theatre major consists of 50 credit hours including 7 credit hours of practicum credit earned through participation in production, a capstone internship or senior project, and a required 18 hour minor. Students in the theatre program practice their craft in community with faculty, staff, and other students in an environment that encourages them to consider their vocation as service in God’s world. A strong foundation in the liberal arts emphasizing critical thinking, effective communication, and scholarly research provides graduates with real-world marketable skills and excellent preparation for graduate studies. Year-round opportunities for students to perform, design, and direct, mentored by faculty and other local professionals, broadens the depth of experience of our students, preparing them to become professionals in theatre.

Program Learning Outcomes

The following learning outcomes are linked to assignments and activities throughout this program. After completing program requirements,

  1. Students will be able to analyze a play script using a variety of interpretive strategies.

  2. Students will be able to synthesize script analysis into artistic expression through the visual, oral, kinesthetic, and written modes of communication found in acting, design, directing, and dramaturgy.

  3. Students will be able to describe how theatre can reflect, promote, and challenge its cultural context.

  4. Students will be able to articulate their personal beliefs, values, attitudes, and abilities in theatre in relation to the Christian story and service in God’s world.

Theatre majors must first audition to be admitted into the program. Students are expected to participate in productions each semester and must remain in good academic standing to participate. Further information is available in the theatre handbook.
