Course Catalog 2017-2018

Musical Theatre, BA/BS

The Musical Theatre major consists of 60 credit hours including 5 credit hours of practicum credit earned through participation in production, coursework specially designed to prepare students in vocal performance, dance, and theatre, and a capstone internship or senior showcase. Students in the musical theatre program practice their craft in community with faculty, staff, and other students in an environment that encourages them to consider their vocation as service in God’s world. A strong foundation in the liberal arts emphasizing critical thinking, effective communication, and scholarly research provides graduates with real-world marketable skills. Year-round opportunities for students to perform, design, and direct, mentored by faculty and other local professionals, broadens the depth of experience of our students, preparing them to become professional musical theatre artists.

Program Learning Outcomes

The following learning outcomes are linked to assignments and activities throughout this program. After completing program requirements,

  1. Students will be able to analyze a play script using a variety of interpretive strategies.
  2. Students will be able to synthesize script analysis into artistic expression through the visual, oral, kinesthetic, and written modes of communication found in acting, design, directing, and dramaturgy.
  3. Students will be able to describe how theatre can reflect, promote, and challenge its cultural context.
  4. Students will develop a professional repertoire and technique for presenting solo audition pieces for musical theatre.
  5. Students will be able to articulate their personal beliefs, values, attitudes, and abilities in theatre in relation to the Christian story and service in God’s world.
Musical Theatre majors must first audition to be admitted into the program. Students with a strong background in music theory should take placement exam and may test out of MUS 1203. Students are expected to participate in production and private voice lessons each semester and must remain in good academic standing in order to participate. Further information is available in the theatre handbook.
