Intensive Travel Policy

An important and valuable aspect of the MA in Sport Leadership program is the intensive experience. The MA in Sport Leadership intensives are valuable for the following reasons:

  • Intensives build a sense of community within cohorts.
  • Intensives give students an opportunity to network with each other, their professors, and leaders and executives in the sport industry.
  • Intensives provide opportunities to experience and apply course content in practical ways to the real-world sport environment.
  • Intensives provide opportunities to tour world-class sport facilities.
  • Intensives provide opportunities to attend and observe high-level sport events.

Due to the value of learning on-site as a cohort, the MA in Sport Leadership program requests that students be physically present at both intensives held during the program. The first intensive will occur at the beginning of the student’s first semester of the program, which will be held on Rochester University's campus. The second intensive will occur at an off-campus location within the U.S.

To participate in the Sport Leadership intensive experience, students are responsible for the following:

  • All travel arrangements and travel expenses to and from the intensive site.
  • All lodging arrangements and lodging expenses during the intensive.
  • All food expenses during the intensive.

We understand that unforeseen circumstances arise that may prohibit a student from participating in an intensive. Exceptions will be made for:

  • Disability or medical condition that prohibits travel
  • Positive Covid test within 5 days prior to travel (or if student has not recovered well and needs additional time at home to rest)
  • Other illness/accident that arises near time of travel
  • Being a primary caretaker for a loved one who is ill or unable to care for themselves (and having no other options for someone to care in student’s place while traveling)
  • An event or other travel that either was scheduled prior to being admitted into the program or arises due to a recent job change

If a student is unable to travel, they should notify the Sport Leadership program director at least one month prior to travel when possible. Other exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis by the program director. Virtual attendance or an alternative way of engaging the course content will still be required to receive course credit. If finances make it prohibitive for a student to travel, please contact the program director at least one month prior to the intensive, and we will look for assistance. We understand that some students have many expectations placed on them in their profession. We ask students to avoid scheduling events, important meetings, and family vacations during intensives. If a student chooses not to travel, and:

  • it does not fall within the exceptions listed above,
  • the student does not notify the directors in advance,
  • and lodging reservations are already made that includes the student as a guest, then the student will be subject to paying their portion of the reservations.
  • then the student will be subject to paying their portion of the reservations.
