Surveys the divergent paths of Western and Eastern European nations in the Cold War era, and the opportunities and challenges presented by the fall of European communism. Includes post-World War II recovery and reconstruction; the onset of the "Iron Curtain" and Cold War; decolonization; the European Union project; national politics, societies and cultures; the collapse of communist regimes; resurgent nationalism and the Yugoslav wars and the challenges of globalization.
