English, BA
The BA in English fosters students’ ability to respond to and produce written texts.
Through composition, creative writing, and literature courses, the instructors introduce the diversity of existing worldviews, the continuity of the human experience, and an appreciation for historical, cultural, and spiritual values. Students develop communication and critical thinking skills, preparing them for graduate school or careers in a wide variety of professions, including education, journalism, technical writing, business, law, library science, and government service. The English major consists of 43 credit hours in English and 6-8 credit hours in a foreign language.
The foreign language requirement supports the global worldview of the liberal arts and helps students attain functional competency in speaking, reading, and writing at an intermediate level, Modern foreign languages, Biblical Hebrew, and Koine Greek may be used to fulfill the foreign language requirement.

The following learning outcomes are linked to assignments and activities throughout this program. After completing program requirements,
- Students will be able to effectively communicate using written texts for a variety of rhetorical situations.
- Students will be able to access and evaluate sources of information; to synthesize, analyze, and integrate the arguments of sources; and to summarize, paraphrase, quote, and document sources in accordance with the conventions of scholarly research.
- Students will be able to understand the historical and cultural contexts of language and literature with specific attention to human diversity.
- Students will be able to apply a wide range of critical theories to canonical and emerging literatures.
- Students will be able to articulate their personal beliefs, values, attitudes, and abilities in English in relation to the Christian story and service in God’s world.
